Pittsburg, Kansas became a town in 1876. As might be expected, the town took its name from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It got its start as a stop on a railroad line and eventually became a mining town. Now it is home to Pittsburg State University as well as two community colleges. The town is home to over 20,000 people and visitors include parents of university students. Things to do include enjoying a day at the local aquatic center, checking out the area's art galleries, or learning more about the history of the area by visiting "Big Brutus," the world's largest electric shovel.

Pittsburg Aquatic Center: It gets hot in the Midwest, which is why the Pittsburg Aquatic Center attracts so many visitors in the summertime. This is a wonderful facility that includes a zero depth entry pool, a children's wading pool, and a water park.
ArtForms Gallery: A gallery dedicated to a variety of mediums. Offers classes for both adults and children.
Big Brutus, Inc.: Pittsburg was a mining town and this retired electric shovel, the largest in the world, is on display for all to see. The Visitor's Center offers information on Big Brutus's history, as well as a gift shop.
Beverly Corcoran Art Gallery: The gallery is part of the Memorial Auditorium complex, so many visitors choose to check out the exhibit before or after a performance. The Corcoran Gallery contains works by local artists as well as loaned pieces. Admission is free.
Hickory Creek Farms: Hickory Creek Farms is a real working farm that sells pumpkins from the end of September through October. During this time, the farm is open to visitors who wish to purchase pumpkins or enjoy a tour. The farm also has a corn maze and offers hayrides at a small charge.
Colonial Fox Theatre: This historic theater hosts a variety of events, including movies, concerts, and ghost tours! Architecture and theatre buffs alike should enjoy their visits here.
