Greenfield History

Greenfield was established in 1841 where the site was selected to house Dade County's first courthouse. Called the "Gate City of the Grotto" in its early years, the town quickly grew prosperous due to its wooded hills, fertile valleys, and abundance of water from local springs. The Opera House, which opened in 1888, is still used by the Dade County Community Theatre for local productions. And, Greenfield High School (1889) stands as the oldest high school in Southwest Missouri.
