Grand County History
Grand County was first established in 1874 when its borders were carved out of Summit County's territory. Its original territory also included present-day Routt and Moffat Counties until these counties were given their own territories in 1877 and 1911, respectively. Hot Sulphur Springs is the active county seat in Grand County.
In 1974, the Grand County Historical Association was created to help preserve the history, historical artifacts, and historical buildings in Grand County. Two of its accomplishments include the restoration of the 1924 Hot Sulphur Springs school house and it becoming the Grand County Museum, and the transformation of the Cozens family ranch house into the Cozens Ranch and Stage Stop Museum. The Cozens Ranch is listed on the Colorado Register of Historic Sites.
