Top Emergency Plumbing Issues
Overview
Indoor plumbing is a marvel that we all depend upon more than we realize. In fact, we typically realize our dependency when something goes wrong and we can’t use our toilet, sink, or bathtub.
In some cases, plumbing issues have relatively straightforward causes that you can address yourself. In other situations, however, it is important to bring in a licensed plumber. Below is a list of issues that your plumbing might have, as well as a course of action.
Common Plumbing Problems
- Clogged toilet: Over time, clogs can develop in toilets. Using a plunger often dislodges trapped debris, but in some cases, you may have to use a plumber’s "snake" to more thoroughly attack the clog.
- Clogged sink, shower, or tub drain: Over time, hair, food particles, and soap scum can build up and create a clog. Many plumbers advise against using caustic chemicals that claim to attack clogs. These products can damage pipes and can pose a risk of chemical burns.
- Low water pressure: This is typically caused by sediment build up but may also point to a more significant problem. Start by soaking your shower head or kitchen sink faucet aerator in vinegar overnight. If this doesn’t do the trick, call a plumber. There may be a breech or leak in your pipes that can become serious if not addressed.
- No hot water: There are few things more unpleasant than stepping into an icy shower. Check your hot water heater. If it is not working, you need to call in a professional.
- Dripping faucets: Drips are annoying and waste water. They are usually caused by a worn out washer. While it is possible for laypeople to replace the washer, it isn’t always as easy as it might seem and there may be additional damage that needs to be addressed.
As you can see from the above list, DYI options can be great for a quick fix, but they aren’t always successful. If you run into problems, stop what you are doing and call in a professional. You don’t want to make the problem worse.
Avoiding Plumbing Problems in the Future
Regular plumbing maintenance is the best way to avoid unpleasant and potentially unsafe issues with your plumbing system. Many plumbers are happy to come to your home to inspect your systems and perform routine maintenance tasks that keep your toilets, sinks, and showers in good working order.
