I hired Joe Arcila, A Handy Joe, to replace a window in my home. Joe came to my house and measured the window. He later told me he’d need to order the window but due to supply chain issues, it would take several months for the window to arrive. That seemed reasonable so I wrote a check for $1,257.83, to the firm for the cost of the window.
Several months later Joe called and told me the window had arrived. I was about to go on a trip, so we agreed on a time and date several weeks out.
I had to travel from Albuquerque, two and a half hours away, so the day before the appointment I texted him to confirm. He replied he’d be dropping off the window and other materials.
I drove to Taos anticipating he’d arrive as scheduled at 8:00 am. I waited for him all morning and finally at 2:30 pm I texted him and asked if he would show. He texted back that he had issues with his work truck, and he’d have to do it the next morning. I replied that he should have contacted me when he found that he was unable to do the job when scheduled, and that I needed to leave in the afternoon for an appointment I had back in Albuquerque.
The next morning, I texted and asked when he’d arrive. He failed to respond so I called him. He then told me he had taken another job that needed to be completed that week and he’d drop off the window knowing I needed to leave by 1:00 pm, and I didn’t need to be there for the install, rather I should just give him access to my house. I then expressed that I was upset he again had failed to call when delayed and he replied that I should find another installer. I agreed and he said he’d drop off the window. Again, he knew I needed to leave for my appointment by 1:00 pm.
Once again, he did not show. At 12:45 I texted him and told him I needed to leave in 15 minutes to make my appointment. I received no response, so I called him. He did not answer, and his voicemail was full.
Finally, I texted him and told him I had to leave for my appointment and that I was filing a complaint with the New Mexico Regulatory and Licensing Division and if the mateer was not resolved quickly I will need to file a civil lawsuit against him.
His response was that he’d drop off the window (When I do not know and there would be no one at the home to receive it.) Furthermore, it was my fault because I was not flexible.
I understand unexpected things happen and issues come up. However, when I schedule an appointment, I take it seriously and try to keep it. If that is not possible due to some unforeseen circumstance, and that does not include scheduling another job on top of a commitment, as a courtesy, I will contact whomever I am to meet, explain the delay, and work with them to reschedule. I do not have them waste time waiting when I know I will not show.
The bottom line is A Handy Joe and Joe Arcila are not dependable and you should think twice before hiring him. I have better luck with other local handymen that show up when they say they will and do a good job.
