Chouteau was originally called "Cody's Creek" and became a stop on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad in 1871. It was known for being a thriving cattle town in its early years. The town name was changed to "Chouteau" after French fur trader Auguste Pierre Chouteau, who also had an area creek named after him.
