Fredericksburg History

Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 and was often referred to by its German residents as "Fritztown." It is the home of the dialect known as Texas German, which was spoken by the earliest generations of German settlers who refused to learn English. The town was founded by Baron Otfried Hans von Meusebach (later known as John O. Meusebach) and named after Prince Frederick of Prussia. It was incorporated as a city in 1928.

Fredericksburg changed from a more isolated community to one that focused on the tourism trade when Lyndon B. Johnson became President of the United States in 1963. Johnson was from nearby Stonewall, and his frequenting of Fredericksburg put the town into the national spotlight. The Fredericksburg-Stonewall area is known as the Peach Capital of Texas, and the Texas Hill Country surrounding the area is greatly known for its vineyards/wineries. Wildflower seeds, bed and breakfast accommodations, and lavender production are just some of the more notable industries in Fredericksburg.
