Grand Lake (with the town officially called "Grand Lake Towne") was formed upon completion of the Pensacola Dam by the Grand River Dam Authority in 1940. The lake's recreational appeal and privacy attracted a handful of early residents to build homes in the area. The town was incorporated in 1961 and confirmed in an Oklahoma Senate resolution in 1965.
