Los Alamos is located on the Pajarito Plateau between White Rock Canyon and the Valles Caldera. Its town site was primed for settlement with the arrival of the railroad system to Northern New Mexico in the late 1800s. The first inhabitants of the Los Alamos area were thought to be Keres-speaking Native Americans around the 10th century.
Los Alamos is also the site of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which undertook the Manhattan Project in 1942. This top-secret World War II project witnessed the transformation of the Los Alamos Ranch School for boys into the main laboratory where the world's first atomic bomb was developed. Today, it is one of two laboratories in the United States where classified work towards the design of nuclear weapons is performed.
