Nevada History
Before being incorporated in 1855, Nevada had been previously known as Fair View and Hog-Eye. Since the "Fairview" had already been taken by another Missouri community, and "Hog-Eye" was considered to be degrading to settlers in the area, the name was changed to Nevada after Nevada City, California.
The American Civil War was difficult on Nevada and the surrounding Vernon County area. In May 1963, pro-Union militiamen from Cedar County attacked the Nevada courthouse, but were beaten back and defeated. Within a few days, more militia arrived to finish the job and the town was completely burned to the ground. Only the jail and a few houses survived the destruction.
