Vinita, originally named Downingville, was first established by Elias Cornelius Boudinot in 1871. It was the first city in the state of Oklahoma to have electricity. Prior to incorporation in 1898, Vinita as renamed after American sculptor Vinnie Ream. The site of the world's largest McDonald's restaurant, the Glasshouse McDonald's built over the top of Interstate 44, resides on the outskirts of the city.
